Echoes in the Bloodline

Mixed media paintings by Orin Carpenter

An echo is a sound that refuses to be silent. In this exhibit, three bodies of work trace the reverberations of Black male experience across generations—how history continues to speak through the body, the home, and the child.

The works stem from three series. In Danger Species, Fractured Souls, and Refraction of Freedom each hold the tension between fracture and continuity: harm that repeats, resilience that persists, and love trying to find language under pressure.

These works ask viewers to consider what becomes inherited when men are forced into endurance—how protection becomes distance, how grief becomes discipline, how fear becomes instruction. Yet the echo also carries the hope that what is heard can be named, and that what is named can be transformed.

Each piece becomes a mirror and a doorway, asking us to recognize the ways that pain travels through homes, friendships, and communities, shaping how love is expressed and how safety is sought.

These are not only portraits of a people. They are portraits of impact.
